A. Fruman

Adelle Fruman acts as an independent arbitrator and mediator and provides other litigation consulting and dispute resolution services. A former trial and appellate judge, Adelle has extensive experience in a wide range of matters, having served in numerous roles within the dispute resolution field.

As an independent arbitrator, Adelle has been appointed to panels of arbitrators as chair and co-arbitrator, and as a sole arbitrator, in a variety of on-shore and offshore petroleum, pipeline, electricity, construction, contract, product liability and other commercial disputes.

Adelle is recognized in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as “Consistently Recommended” for Commercial Arbitration, and is ranked by Chambers and Partners as a "Most in Demand Arbitrator" in Dispute Resolution. She has been appointed to the Panel of Arbitrators for the International Center for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the international division of the American Arbitration Association. Adelle is also a member of the Western Canada Commercial Arbitration Society.

As an independent mediator, Adelle has successfully resolved more than 500 insured and uninsured disputes in diverse areas of law involving aggregate claims in excess of a billion dollars.

Adelle served as a judge of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta and the Courts of Appeal of Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut for a total of 14 years. Adelle has adjudicated a wide range of cases at both the trial and appellate level and participated in more than 400 reported judgments. The appellate cases include appeals from trial courts, as well as from administrative tribunals, including energy and securities regulators and municipal planning authorities. Adelle completed the Harvard University Mediation program, helped establish the Courts’ judicial dispute resolution program and, for many years, instructed judges in alternative dispute resolution processes.

In private practice, Adelle specialized in corporate, commercial and securities law, acting primarily for companies in the mining, oil and gas and energy servicing industries. She also served as senior internal legal counsel with a privately-owned multi-national group with real estate, land planning and financial services operations.
